Beertography Subject: The Alchemist/Ninkasi/Stone Brewing Co. More Brown Than Black IPA

Poured into a tulip glass. Two fingers of head which came down slowly. Nice lacing and a hazy nut-brown color.

Smell is predominately hops ; the nose is straight spruce tips and pine trees. Tropical fruits; passion fruit, grapefruit, pineapple.  Finishes with a hint of bubblegum, caramel and biscuit malt.

The taste is a hop experiment gone wonderfully right. The aroma hops are so different from most other IPA’s.  It’s big and round with pineapple and grapefruit. I’d argue that there is a little bubblegum taste here too. The malt is balanced with a little chocolate, smoke, and liquorish. It has a subtle, yet firm, bitterness.

Mouthfeel is creamy and middy carbonated. The hop resin stays for a while and the warmth from the alcohol is perfect.

Overall, this is an exciting beer because it is using some of the newer hop varieties to make some interesting tastes. I really like this beer a lot both because it’s unique tasting and because it’s a nice compromise between an IPA and a black IPA. I hope to see more brown IPA’s.
