Commercial description: Moon Man is a seriously cool cat. Always comfortable in his own skin, he never tries too hard. So cool we named our “no coast” pale ale after him. You hold a session beer with a bright bold blend of five hops that flirt obligingly with the smooth malty backside. Don’t let this one lay around it is brewed to be enjoyed today. Bold and engaging without pretense, because in Wisconsin you do not have to be extreme to be real. Just be.
Special shout-out to Jacob, a.k.a. “Sud Savant” for this little gem. Sadly, New Glarus is not distributed in Ohio : (
Pours a lovely crystal clear golden orange color and a compact one and a half finger fluffy white head. head that retains and laces beautifully. Exactly what an American Pale Ale should look like.
Wonderful aroma of bright citrus, lemongrass, nectarines, piney hops over a doughy malt body. Very nice floral character. Secondary scents of bubblegum and coriander.
Taste is not as fruit intensive as the nose. It starts with modest citrus notes; orange, lemon, mango and orange. An assertive pine bite comes through; the hops are all over but not overbearing thanks to a generous malt backbone. The flavors too are very fresh and fruity. There is plenty of fruit character with plenty of citrus and tropical fruit. Very nice balance with a slightly hop-forward pleasant bite..
Light crisp mouthfeel with light medium carbonation.
OVERALL IMPRESSION (10/10)
I’ve had some mighty fine American Pale Ales: Zombie Dust, Alpha King, Daisy Cutter, AleSmith X. So am I saying Moon Man is as good as these world-class offerings? Almost. We would be splitting hairs at this point. This is a top quality American pale ale from a remarkable Wisconsin brewery that you don’t hear a lot about.
